Mara Bush Camp
After having traveled extensively throughout Africa and particularly Kenya I was recently given the opportunity to stay at Mara Bush Camp (Sunworld Safaris) in the Masai Mara, Kenya.
What an opportunity that was!
I found there, situated on an oxbow in the river, a haven of peace and tranquility, comfort and luxury, seldom surpassed by any of the big names in Tented Safari’s.
Being welcomed so warmly by Charles and the staff; who couldn’t do enough to ensure my stay was relaxing, enjoyable and problem free, was like a breath of fresh air after the dust, sweat and the occasional heavy rain storms that can prevail in September.
Mara Bush Camp has been exquisitely decorated with furnishings tastefully chosen to mirror the savannah surroundings of the bush. After sundown the lounge, bar and restaurant are beautifully lit by lamplight creating an ambiance favourable to not only the guests but also the native hippo inhabitants; who amble out of the river to feed after dark. The Maasai escort each guest to and from their tent to ensure safety, which is helpful when one has indulged in one or two Amarula’s or Tucker’s.
Dining was of the highest quality and moreish, with plenty of choice to suit every taste including vegetarians. Breakfast and lunch served outside by the river with daytime views of a resident hippo bull basking in the sunshine on the far bank and birds flutter around just begging to be photographed. Dinner was served under the multitude of stars to the sounds of croaking frogs and chirping crickets. Tables lit by lamps give an incredibly romantic feel to your evening in the bush. (Shame I wasn’t with my husband).
The tent, furnished with exceedingly comfortable four-poster beds, complete with mosquito nets and a hot water bottle make bedtime very cosy. A fully equipped bathroom complete with bush-style bucket shower helps to wash away the dust of the day. The Kikoi toweling robes were an absolutely wonderful touch of class (I almost stole one!)
Your morning wake-up call is accompanied by a flask full of hot coffee or tea and biscuits, assisting in your gentle transition to yet another glorious day in Kenya’s most famous Reserve.
I owe a debt of gratitude to Gabrielle, Dave, Charles and all the staff at Mara Bush Camp for one of the most pleasing and relaxing experiences I have ever had in a tented camp. The endeavors of your staff came to fruition and I can’t wait to return. Thank you.
